Among these, solar energy has decisive advantages: inexhaustible for serving human needs, accessible to everyone and available in great quantities. Today, it appears obvious that the photovoltaic sector will be one of the preferred building blocks for energy transition.

To cope with the impacts of climate change, renewable energies have established themselves, along with other sources of carbon-free energy, as one of the alternatives open to us. Among these, solar energy has decisive advantages: inexhaustible for serving human needs, accessible to everyone and available in great quantities. Today, it appears obvious that the photovoltaic sector will be one of the preferred building blocks for energy transition.
CREATING A COLLABORATIVE INSTITUTE
The Institut Photovoltaïque d’Île-de-France (IPVF) stems from a partnership between industry and research. Created at the initiative of EDF and Total, it has paired up with leading French industrial groups such as Air Liquide, sector equipment manufacturers like Horiba and Riber and academic partners, such as the CNRS and the École Polytechnique. It federates their photovoltaic solar energy research activities and is designed for carrying out research work hand-in-hand with all sector players, by developing its partner network on regional, national and global levels.
CREATING A COLLABORATIVE INSTITUTE
The Institut Photovoltaïque d’Île-de-France (IPVF) stems from a partnership between industry and research. Created at the initiative of EDF and Total, it has paired up with leading French industrial groups such as Air Liquide, sector equipment manufacturers like Horiba and Riber and academic partners, such as the CNRS and the École Polytechnique. It federates their photovoltaic solar energy research activities and is designed for carrying out research work hand-in-hand with all sector players, by developing its partner network on regional, national and global levels.

IPVF’s strength is, first and foremost, its researchers. Some 200 researchers, industrialists and academics work diligently on a daily basis to build solar solutions for tomorrow. 150 of them are based on the IPVF premises and some 50 others in our 11 academic partner laboratories across France (Paris region, Lyon, Nantes, Marseille, Rennes, Strasbourg and Amiens).

Cross-disciplinarity and diversity are at the very heart of IPVF’s research. IPVF researchers total some 25 nationalities, with profiles as varied as physicists, chemists, optics specialists, modellers as well as economists.

L’IPVF s’est installé en octobre 2017 à Palaiseau, au cœur du Campus Paris-Saclay dans un bâtiment de plus 8 000m² conçu par Jean-Philippe Pargade Architecte pour favoriser le travail collaboratif de chercheur·e·s issu·e·s de structures différentes. En 2020, le plateau de Saclay hébergera 15 à 20% de la recherche française, à travers 12 000 chercheur·e·s, 6 800 doctorants et 31 000 étudiants. L’Institut regroupe sur un seul lieu l’ensemble de ses équipements de recherche de pointe et les met à la disposition de ses chercheur·e·s.

Cette plateforme de recherche et développement attractive, partagée et collaborative, adaptée aux enjeux du marché, permet aux partenaires de contribuer à l’ensemble des programmes de recherche. Tous, chercheur·e·s, experts, industriels ou startups qui souhaitent bénéficier de cet environnement technologique de pointe, sont copropriétaires des résultats.

Ce mode de fonctionnement pluridisciplinaire, à la fois académique, de recherche et industriel, stimule l’innovation des 150 chercheur·e·s dont les compétences et les cultures sont différentes et complémentaires.
