Photoluminescence (PL) is a powerful technique to study a wide range of properties in photovoltaic materials and devices. It consists in analyzing the light radiated by a sample when submitted to a (laser) illumination. This light offers direct insights not only on the material’s composition, but also on the lifetime of photogenerated carriers or on their transport properties. Furthermore, PL measurement only requires an optical access to the sample under scrutiny, and no electrical contact is needed.
PL is thus particularly well suited to perform in situ studies, where the sample being processed or operated, and cannot be put under the usual measurement apparatus. It is notably relevant to study the aging of devices, which are locked in a climatic chamber with controlled environment (temperature, humidity…). However, in situ PL measurement also raises specific challenges, both in terms of instrumentation (how to collect enough signal without disturbing the on-going operations?) and of interpretation (how is the on-going operation modifying the PL signal?)
The goal of this intership is to start the development of an experimental setup to study in-situ the aging of solar cells by photoluminescence. The first step will be the construction of a setup outside the climatic chamber. The setup will then be tested with standard samples. In parallel, the automation of the experiment will be implemented in order to perform regular measurements over a long period of time.
Basic skills in optics (laser collimation…) and programming (Labview…). The intern will be supervised on a weekly basis. He or she will be in charge of the construction of the apparatus. Basic equipment will be provided (laser source, analyzer, computer…) and the intern will be able to order complementary material if needed.
